NEW IRON ORE PRODUCTION FROM THE QUEBEC-LABORADOR LATERITE DEPOSITS
by Lee Nichols, Terracon Geotechnique
New Millennium Iron Corp and Tata Steel and Minerals Canada have been developing open pits and producing high grade direct shipping Laterite ores for the past two years. These reserves were originally part of the resources discovered and exploited between 1954 and 1981 by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Infrastructure has been completed to move the high grade direct shipping ore and concentrate to the shipping point at Pointe Noire Quebec on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River. A new superdock to be completed in the first quarter of 2015 gives NML-TSMC fifteen million tones of annual shipping capacity and access to the largest seaborne ore carriers.
