“Early Access Routes to and within the the Yukon”
by James Allan. P.Geo., Calgary
All the early access routes in the Yukon and other parts of Northern Canada were opened primarily to support and service the mining industry. These routes, to and within the Yukon, include such famous routes as the Chilkoot and White Pass and the water routes such as the MacKenzie and Yukon Rivers.
During the Second World War the Alaska Highway and the Canol Oil Pipeline were constructed by the US Army and civilian contractors to provide land access to Alaska from the southern US (south 48) as a result of the Japanese threat and oil for the US armed forces in the region.
Although there was some sporadic, mostly local, air service in the 1930’s and 40’s scheduled air service with connections to other parts of Canada did not start until the early 1950’s.
All of the routes have some interesting stories which Jim will share with you primarily through old photographs. There will also be a short video presentation on the White Pass Yukon Railway at the end of the presentation.
